NCRB Data Reveals Higher Suicide Rates Among Men Due to Family Disputes

 |

There has been an alarming increase in suicide cases in India in recent years. This is not limited to women only. A huge increase has been seen in suicide cases among men as well, which has become a matter of serious concern for society. Especially due to conflict in marriage and relationships, the incidents of suicide among men have increased.

Why are such cases increasing rapidly among men?

Is there a lack of awareness in society about the mental health of men, and are they getting adequate help? The figures released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) shed light on this, making it clear that cases of male suicide are increasing more rapidly than female cases. In this article, we will talk about the reasons behind the increasing cases of suicide among men and know what is the solution to this serious problem.

What do the NCRB figures say?

According to NCRB, the total number of suicide cases in India in 2022 was 1,70,924. Of these, about 73 percent were men, while 27 percent were women. If we understand it in count, then in the year 2022, 122724 cases of male suicide and 48172 cases of female suicide were registered. The data also revealed that in the year 2022, the highest number of male suicide cases were registered in the age group of 18 to 30 years. Of the total cases of men, 35 percent of the cases were of this age group. At the same time, 32 percent of the cases came out of the age group of 30 to 45.

This figure indicates a big change because earlier, this ratio was more in favor of female suicide. According to this report, personal and social reasons are the main reasons for suicide, which include financial crisis, mental stress, family discord, and dissatisfaction in relationships. According to the data, cases from the years 2018 to 2022 were included in it.

If we look at the situation of the state of India, the highest number of suicide cases were registered in Maharashtra, where 22746 people took their own lives. This number was 19834 in Tamil Nadu, 15386 cases were registered in Madhya Pradesh, 13606 in Karnataka, and 12669 in West Bengal. Among the Union Territories, the highest number of cases were registered in Delhi, where the number was 3417.

Marriage and relationships are becoming the cause of suicide:

The doctor said that stress in marriage and relationships is considered to be one of the major reasons for suicide. This problem has increased in men because they are under pressure to conform to a certain rigid image in society. Due to this pressure, they do not talk to anyone about their mental problems, which worsens their mental condition. As a result, they feel unable to deal with failure in relationships or family conflicts and take steps like suicide.

Stress in marriage, divorce, and family quarrels increase stress and depression in men. Apart from this, men feel mentally and physically weak due to dissatisfaction and mistrust in relationships. As a result, their self-confidence decreases, and they feel isolated from society. This situation promotes suicide.

Reasons for suicide in men :

According to the NCRB, in the year 2022, 31.7 percent of the cases of suicide in men were due to family reasons, 4.5 percent of the cases were due to love affairs, and 4.8 percent of suicide cases were registered due to marriage-related problems. In 6.4 percent of the cases, the cause of suicide was illness, and 6.8 percent cases of drug abuse and alcohol addiction were registered. 1.9 percent of the cases were registered due to unemployment, 1.2 percent related issues, 4.1 percent bankruptcy, and 1.2 percent of the cases were registered due to failure in the exam.

What is the solution to this serious situation?

To deal with this situation, both society and the government will have to work together. Social and family support is necessary to increase awareness of the mental health of men. Families need to come forward to understand the mental health of their male member and listen to their problems. Apart from this, it is also important to make mental health services accessible to all and promote mental counseling services. To reduce the incidence of suicide, education and awareness campaigns also need to be run.

People have to understand that seeking help for mental health problems is not a weakness, but it is a symbol of mental strength. This can reduce the rate of suicide, and people will feel more comfortable in sharing their problems.

NCRB figures make it clear that cases of suicide are increasing rapidly among men, and the main reason behind this is marriage and relationship disputes. Society needs to pay attention to this serious problem so that awareness about men's mental health can be increased and cases of suicide can be reduced.
