The Science Behind Twin Births: How Do Twins Form?

Twins occur mainly in two ways:

Monozygotic twins:

They are also called monozygotic twins. This type of twins occurs when one egg is fertilized by one sperm, but then the egg splits into two. The two halves of the egg then develop into separate babies. Such twins have identical genes (genetic material) and are attached to the same placenta. So these babies look almost the same and are usually of the same gender, meaning both will be boys or both will be girls.

Dizygotic twins:

These twins live in your womb when two eggs are released from your ovary and fertilized by two different sperm. These twins have different genes (genetic material) and placentas. That is why these children usually do not look the same. They can be the same gender or different gender.

When are the chances of twins more likely?

Twins are more likely to occur in the following situations.

If you are a twin yourself or there is a history of twins in your family, your husband being a twin will not affect this situation.
Your height is more than five feet five inches, which means you are taller than normal.
You eat more nutritious and balanced food and your weight is higher than normal.
You are 35 years of age or older. As you age, your ovaries start producing more than one egg at a time.
You have already given birth to twins.
In addition to this condition, some women can give birth to twins, depending entirely on the union of the egg and sperm.
