How Tooth Erosion Occurs and How to Protect Your Smile

What is tooth enamel (plaque) erosion?

A thin layer surrounding the tooth that provides strength to the tooth. It is called enamel.
Oral bacteria come into contact with food and produce acids that erode enamel.

What is the importance of tooth enamel?

Prevents plaque (food deposits on teeth).
Prevents tooth decay.
Gives strength to the teeth.
Protects the internal sensitive layer from hot and cold foods.

Effective steps to prevent tooth decay:

Tooth decay can be prevented by limiting the acid's contact with the teeth.
Eat a healthy, balanced diet.
Drink fluoridated water instead of cold drinks or juice.
Eat fruit instead of drinking fruit juice.
Do not eat fruit between meals.
Reduce how often you eat or drink acidic foods.
Do not chew vitamin C tablets. If necessary, take a vitamin C supplement.
Use sugar-free chewing gum after meals to promote saliva flow. Saliva is very important for protecting teeth from decay.
Consider using dental products containing stannous fluoride. Recent studies have shown that stannous fluoride is effective in reducing tooth decay.
Rinse your mouth with water or rinse with fluoride.
Rinse your mouth with sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) (a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water).
Eat dairy products.
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush with fluoridated toothpaste (1000 ppm), which helps strengthen the enamel.
Avoid brushing for more than 2 minutes.
After your dinner, wait at least 30 minutes before brushing.
Drink a glass of milk after every meal to reduce the effects of acid attacks.
