Why Frequent Urination Happens During Pregnancy: Top Causes

Frequent urination is one of the most common symptoms of pregnancy and this problem starts around the sixth week of pregnancy. However, frequent urination is an annoying symptom of pregnancy.

This problem does not cause any harm to you or your baby. It is the best way to eliminate toxins from the body. As long as you do not experience any other symptoms, frequent urination during pregnancy is completely normal.

Here are some of the reasons for excessive urination during pregnancy:

Hormonal changes.

The HCG hormone that is active during pregnancy is a major cause of excessive urination. It increases blood flow to the pelvic area and kidneys, which then work more efficiently. Your body tries to get rid of toxins.

Pressure on the bladder.

When you are not pregnant, your bladder can hold about 500 ml of urine. But at 6 weeks, your uterus expands and puts pressure on the bladder. A shrinking bladder cannot hold as much urine, so the bladder tries to empty as quickly as possible. This can be a major cause of frequent urination during pregnancy.

Excess fluid buildup.

Your blood volume increases during pregnancy and is about 50% higher than before pregnancy. As a result, excess fluid builds up which collects in the kidneys and causes frequent urination.

Urinary tract infection.

A UTI or bladder infection can lead to serious problems if left untreated. Frequent urination is one of them. Other symptoms include burning during urination, pain at the end of urination, and blood in the urine.

If a UTI is left untreated, it can lead to a kidney infection (pyelonephritis), which can cause fever, vomiting, and back pain.

How to control frequent urination during pregnancy.

Don't drink coffee, tea, or some carbonated drinks (like soda). These are all diuretics, which make you need to urinate more often.
When you urinate, try to empty your bladder.
Go to the bathroom as soon as you feel the need to urinate. Holding in urine for a long time can weaken the muscles in your pelvic area.
Do Kegel exercises. Kegel exercises help you gain control over your bladder. The best thing about these exercises is that they can be done anywhere and at any time.

When does the problem of frequent urination during pregnancy get better?

Even after delivery, the feeling of frequent urination does not subside for the first few days, as the body tries to get rid of the extra fluids gained during pregnancy. When all the excess fluid is drained, the urinary process returns to the same path as before. However, if this condition persists for a long time, you should talk to your doctor.
