Pollution and Eye Diseases: Expert Tips for Eye Health

Air Pollution And Eye Health: The eyes are one of the most delicate and sensitive organs of the body. The surrounding environment and atmosphere also affect the health of the eyes. In such a situation, when pollution increases and the quality of air deteriorates, it also affects the health of the eyes.

Eyes are more susceptible to air pollution than any other part of the body. At the same time, people wearing contact lenses may have an increased chance of having different types of problems due to pollution. Let us tell you that microparticles like PM 2.5, NO2, and SO2 dissolved in the air hurt the eyes.

According to different studies done in Eye Science till some time ago, the average PM 2.5 concentration increases the chances of eye disease by 1 percent. Every year in winter, a thick layer of smoke and fog is seen in North India. This also deteriorates the air quality and also reduces visibility. While pollution causes problems in seeing people properly, many eye diseases also increase due to air pollution.

These eye diseases increase due to pollution:

Dr. says that cases of dry eye syndrome (DES) increase due to air pollution. A tremendous increase has been seen in urban areas with high pollution levels, resulting in redness and irritation of the eyes. This condition arises when sufficient tears are not produced to keep the eyes lubricated, causing discomfort, itching, and irritation in the eyes.

Similarly, cases of conjunctivitis also increase due to pollution. At the same time, dryness in the eyes of those who wear contact lenses can increase due to pollution. With the increase in pollution, the risk of ulcers and serious infections in the eyes also increases.

What measures to take to protect eyes during pollution:

Use eye drops-

Due to the increasing level of air pollution in the winter months, especially in North India and areas around New Delhi, it is advisable to take some precautions regarding the eyes. If a patient is suffering from dry eyes, eye drops can be used to get relief.

Take care of cleanliness-

Avoid touching the eyes with dirty hands as doing so can cause dirt from the hands to reach the eyes and increase the risk of eye infection.

Use glasses-

UV-blocking sunglasses can help protect the eyes from both pollution and sunlight. In an environment where there is excessive pollution, wrap-around sunglasses can be convenient to use and help protect people from dust and other particles. Another way to remove irritants present in the environment is to use air purifiers with HEPA filters and keep the house clean and humid.

Heat therapy or warm water fomentation-

To reduce the swelling in the eyes due to exposure to air pollution, you can also do warm water fomentation. This reduces pain and swelling.

Along with all this, drink 2-3 liters of water a day. This helps in staying hydrated and removing toxins from the body. Also, do not delay in consulting a doctor in case of any problem in the eyes.
