What is Achalasia?

Achalasia is a rare but serious disease that affects the food pipe (esophagus). Although it can occur at any age, most cases occur between the ages of 30-70. Achalasia usually takes several years to develop.

What are the symptoms of Achalasia?

Difficulty swallowing food.
Chest discomfort due to esophageal dilation or retained food.
Chest pain.
Weight loss due to eating less.
Feeling like a lump in the throat.

What causes Achalasia?

Achalasia occurs due to damage to the nerves of the esophagus and their loss of function. Additionally, the valves and food pipe do not work properly.

Achalasia is associated with several other diseases, such as viral infections, autoimmune diseases, and genetics.
